Strange shell towers made by tube worms!

Strange shell towers encountered along the shore of Braamspunt on the morning of 21st April 2008. The towers consist of many different kinds of shells, big and small, all stacked and stuck together. Some have branches in them as well. What causes these or who made these and why and how??? Click on the thumbnails on the left of this article to view more pictures of these bizarre structures.

15 September 2015: Thanks to inquiries by one of our dedicated volunteers, we now have this mystery solved! According to Rachel Collins of the Smithsonian Institute these stacked shell structures are actually the top part of a tube from a tube worm. Probably a sabellid.
