Braamspunt lies about 15 km from the center of Paramaribo and can be reached only by boat. It's located on the east bank of the mouth of the Suriname River, just north of the confluence with the Commewijne River. The area is built up from a mix of sand and shells and inland it's bordered by black mangrove. The sand arrives from the sandy beaches migrating from the east. The beach at Braamspunt changes both in form and composition on an almost weekly basis. It's not clear whether this is because of natural influences, or both anthropogenic and natural influences. Climate change has resulted in increasing wave and wind action that has made these changes happen even faster! And sand mining on Braamspunt might be the cause of more erosion at the Weg naar Zee area across the mouth of the river (Augustinus, 2012).
